Diced Cucumbers
by Amy Classen

About the author
My name is Amy Classen. I'm 19 years old and live in Cannon Falls MN. This fall I'll attend Columbia College in Chicago to pursue both fiction writing and illustration.

Editors Note: Amy has been haunting and illuminating the rooms of my house for many years. We have held myriad & random summits on life and the pursuit of same around the table on the porch in summer and the fireplace in winter. She is one of us.

Diced cucumbers sit in one,
Fist- sized, over
Analyzed porcelain
Cup

And that's
All
That lies between us.

He wears
His heart on his
Sleeve,
And a lottery ticket
In
His breast pocket.

I told him I
Loved
Him. He
Let the words hang in
The air like
Wet
Denim on a clothesline.

It's time to go.

Three one dollar bills
On the
Table,

He remembers
What
I taste like.

Still.
Still nothing.
No wind, no dew,
No heavy interrupted breathing,
No.
Still standing here.

In this parking lot,
Outside the diced cucumbers, and the
Gratuities, and the damp jeans in the humid air,
And the whole world,
Is us.

My lace shirt scratches at my skin
And at the end
Of it all,
I found my own ride home.
